Seed Animation Studio FAQs – London Character Animation Studio
Who are Seed Animation Studio?
Seed Animation Studio is an independent London-based character animation studio founded in 2003. The studio is led by Creative Director Morgan Powell and Executive Producer Neil Kidney. Morgan thinks in characters and worlds- he finds the emotional core of a brief before a single frame is drawn. Neil makes it real, keeps it on track, and has the kind of calm that comes from having delivered complex campaigns with teams of thirty without breaking a sweat. Every project is personally led by both of them.
What makes you different?
Two things.
First, we come in early. The most memorable animated work is shaped before the brief is finished, when the character still needs a personality and when the story still needs a spine. We’re at our best in that collaborative space, thinking alongside the creative team before anything is locked.
Second, we lead every project personally. Morgan and Neil are across every job from first conversation to final delivery. The work is never handed off. We build the team each project needs around us, drawing from a network of specialist animators, illustrators, directors of photography, puppeteers and technicians- but the creative and production leadership is always the same two people.
No fixed house style. No signature technique. Every project looks like itself.
What do you do?
Seed makes character animation for advertising agencies and brands- TV commercials, brand films, music videos, and digital content across 2D, 3D/CGI, mixed media and AI-assisted animation.
What sets Seed apart is when we get involved. Most studios wait for a locked script. We’d rather be in the room earlier- when the character is still being figured out, when the world they live in is still up for grabs. That’s where the best work starts, and it’s where animation ends up being something people actually remember.
What is your creative process, from concept to delivery?
We like to get involved before the brief is fully formed, even if that just means a conversation about the character or the feeling the work needs to have. The earlier we’re in, the better the foundation.
Once the creative direction is set, we work collaboratively through script, mood board and style frames, character design, storyboarding and animatics, with client sign-off at each stage before moving forward. Animation is then built shot by shot toward a final cut that reflects exactly what was agreed.
The full process covers: creative development, script, concept design, character design, world-building, storyboarding, animatics, animation, editing, compositing, sound design, music composition and voice-over. Everything handled by the Seed team- nothing outsourced
Who will be handling our project, and what is their background?
Morgan and Neil lead every project personally- from first brief to final delivery. That never changes regardless of project size.
Seed operates without a large permanent staff by design. Around each project we assemble a team of specialist freelancers- 2D and 3D animators, illustrators, directors of photography, puppeteers, sound designers, composers- chosen specifically for what that job needs. This means the creative and production thinking is always Morgan and Neil, supported by the exact talent the project calls for.
It’s a model that’s delivered everything from single brand films to 14 TV commercials across multiple languages in under three months.
Do you work with AI animation?
Yes and we’ve been doing it long enough to know what it’s actually useful for.
The interesting territory isn’t AI that looks like AI. It’s AI as a tool in service of character, handling the technical heavy lifting so all the creative energy goes into performance and personality. Our East End Santa film is a good example of what that looks like in practice: seedanimation.com/animation/east-end-santa-ai-puppetry/
We work across AI-assisted puppeteering, AI motion and generative techniques- always with human creative direction at the centre. If AI is landing on your briefs and you’re not sure what’s actually possible, we’re happy to talk it through.
What size budgets do you typically work with?
Most Seed projects sit in the £30,000–£300,000 range, with the majority of commercial work between £50,000 and £150,000. Larger campaigns (like multi-spot TV packages) have run considerably higher.
We’re transparent about budget early. If a brief and a budget aren’t a realistic match, we’ll say so straight away and talk through what is possible within the numbers. No one’s time gets wasted.
Do you work directly with brands, or only through agencies?
Both- and with equal enthusiasm.
A significant part of Seed’s work comes through advertising agencies, and we’re experienced at fitting into agency workflows, collaborating with creative teams, and delivering within agency production structures.
We also work directly with brands, particularly with in-house creative teams and marketing directors who are running projects without an agency intermediary. The process is the same either way: Morgan and Neil lead the project, the work gets the same attention, and the creative ambition doesn’t change based on who’s briefing us.
If you’re a brand with an idea and you’re not sure whether you need an agency involved, that’s a perfectly good conversation to have with us first.
Brand collaborations include:
Universal Music, Island Records, Coca-Cola, O2, Shell, Lego, NHS, Sage, MTV, and Adult Swim.

2D illustrative animation, 3D and CGI animation, mixed-media production blending animation with live action or miniature sets, and AI-assisted animation and puppeteering.
The studio does not handle architectural visualisations or technical CAD-style animation.
What is your creative process, from concept to delivery?
Every project at Seed Animation Studio begins with an open conversation to understand the client’s business, message and goals. From there, a creative concept is shaped collaboratively- typically starting with a script and visual mood board or style frames, with client feedback woven in at every stage.
Once the script is locked, character designs, storyboards and animatics are developed to solidify the film’s foundation. The studio then animates shot by shot, building toward a cohesive final cut that faithfully captures the approved vision. The full process covers: script development, concept design, character design, world-building, storyboarding, animatics, animation, editing, compositing, sound design, music composition and voice-over, all handled in-house by the Seed Animation Studio team.
How do you handle project timelines and deadlines?
A detailed production schedule is produced at the start of every project, outlining each milestone with built-in windows for client feedback. Schedules are planned backward from the client’s deadline, ensuring on-time delivery every time.Seed Animation Studio has a strong track record of managing complex, high-volume productions to tight deadlines- including delivering 14 commercials across multiple languages within a three-month window.Clients are kept informed at every stage, with regular face-to-face meetings, video calls and phone check-ins scheduled throughout production to keep all parties aligned.
What is included in your pricing- and what costs extra?
Fixed quotes are provided based on the agreed brief and creative scope. All costs are discussed and agreed upfront, ensuring full financial transparency throughout the project- there are no surprise charges. Significant changes to the brief during production may incur additional costs. However, Seed Animation Studio will always discuss and agree any additional fees before proceeding, so clients are never caught off guard. A typical quote covers all core production stages: scripting, concept design, character design, storyboarding, animatics, animation, editing, compositing, sound design, music composition and voice-over- scoped specifically to the agreed brief.
How many rounds of revisions are included, and what is the process?
Revision time is built into the production schedule at every milestone. Rather than limiting clients to a fixed number of revision rounds, Seed Animation Studio works collaboratively at each stage, consolidating feedback and only moving forward once the client is entirely satisfied with the current phase. The revision process follows the production stages: script, mood board and style frames, character design, storyboards, animatics, and final animation. Client approval is required at each stage before progressing to the next, ensuring the final film faithfully reflects the agreed creative vision
What’s your communication process during production?
Throughout production, Seed Animation Studio is hands-on and responsive. Regular face-to-face meetings, video calls and phone check-ins are scheduled to keep all parties aligned and address any questions in real time. Clients are guided step by step as the film takes shape- with clear visibility at every production stage, from initial concept through to final delivery.
Can you work within our brand guidelines?
Absolutely. Working within client brand guidelines is a core part of Seed Animation Studio’s process. The studio has extensive experience integrating brand identity seamlessly into animated content- respecting typography, colour, tone and character style across every frame.
Where guidelines leave room for interpretation- for example, animation-specific elements not covered by an existing style guide- the Studio draws on the brand’s core ethos to ensure the finished film feels authentic and consistent with the wider brand world.
How do you ensure quality control and consistency?
Quality and consistency are central to every project Seed Animation Studio delivers. With over 20 years and hundreds of productions behind them, the studio has developed a rigorous production process that maintains quality at every stage- from initial concept through to final frame.
